Understanding Vulnerability As A Strength
“Vulnerability is the core, the heart, the center, of meaningful human experiences.” – Brené Brown
What comes to your mind when you hear the word vulnerability? For a long time, I would always associate vulnerability with a force that stops you from achieving the things you wish. In fact, many people believe that being vulnerable puts you on the edge and from there, things only go downhill.
Whenever we feel vulnerable, we attach it to weakness because we are so focused on how our body is responding that we let our negative thoughts take over. Being vulnerable is actually a good thing because it exposes your raw side and whatever you choose to do under vulnerability always comes from the heart.
Vulnerability is often associated with feelings of fear, shame, or uncertainty. From the day we make sense of things, we’re taught to not express vulnerability perhaps because it can be abused or misunderstood.
Let’s explore the strength of vulnerability better…
Misconception About Vulnerability
The basic concept of being vulnerable has not been very clear. As we discussed earlier, it is widely accepted that vulnerability is a weakness. Have you ever wondered why? It is because vulnerability brings the raw side out and many of us fail to manage our feelings and emotions at that time.
The fact that you’re unable to deal with your emotions and feelings when you’re vulnerable is because we’ve never been taught to understand vulnerability better. Unfortunately, it is fixed in our mind that vulnerability is a weakness that not many have tried to see past it.
“What happens when people open their hearts? They get better.” — Haruki Murakami. Vulnerability is more about being open, raw is straight from the heart. Being vulnerable is about accepting your truth and not holding on to the persona that you’ve created for yourself.

Vulnerability is not even close to being weak, in fact, it’s quite the opposite. It’s high time we understand the feeling we get when you’re vulnerable is your mind telling you that the filter is off. I think being vulnerable is about having the courage to be open and honest about your true self.
Why Is It Important To Be Vulnerable?
There is no denying the fact that being vulnerable can be painful. Once you gain enough awareness about yourself, your feelings, and your emotions, the vulnerability will only become your strength.
Vulnerability helps you understand that letting your guard down is okay. Being vulnerable puts you in a spot where all your insecurities are out in the open and in the process, you somewhere accept your shortcomings & face your fears.
Let’s look at some of the benefits of being vulnerable;
1. Vulnerability gives you the space to be your true self and not stick to the appropriate personality that society expects you to have. So, you can be your authentic, non-filtered self when you’re vulnerable.
2. Vulnerability gives way to empathy. When you experience your true feelings and emotions while being vulnerable, it teaches you a lesson that everyone has their own demons to fight and we should at least be empathetic towards others.
3. Being vulnerable helps you understand your emotions better. Because vulnerability brings hidden emotions out for you and it becomes easier for you to address them and not push them away.
4. Vulnerability can boost your resilience. When you are put in a vulnerable spot over and over again, you basically get more chances to explore your emotions and true self. Therefore, being vulnerable can help in increasing your resilience.
5. Another reason why vulnerability is important is that it helps you foster healthy and true connections. Being vulnerable can help in your relationship because it helps you let your partner have a proper understanding of what your true self is.
