Live Your Life Without Expectations

My peers often tell me that my self-expectations are too high, and I lose sight of what’s in front of me because I struggle to meet my expectations. Not that they are wrong! We all have certain expectations — from ourselves, our jobs, and our loved ones. From an early age, we’re taught to set goals and dream big.

And while I understand that this can be motivating, in truth, it can cause disappointment, frustration, and unhappiness when we fail to meet our expectations. Living with expectations seems to be the norm, so can we learn to live without expectations?

Living without expectations doesn’t mean that you’re choosing to abandon your goals; it means that you’re choosing a mindset that prioritizes acceptance and gratitude more. So, let’s keep reading to learn how to live a life without expectations — and even if there are expectations, then how to keep them realistic and few!

Living Without Expectations…

We all have expectations — whether it’s a promotion at work, finding a “perfect” partner, or wanting to feel appreciated for our efforts. These expectations shape how we experience life and emotions. When we meet our expectations, we feel accomplished, however, if we fail to meet our self-imposed expectations, we feel disappointed, resentment, and even despair.

Moreover, when you live without expectations, you embrace the present moment and accept life as it is. You recognize that while you can influence some things, you can’t control everything. This mindset makes you focus on what’s now, instead of what could be.

Living without expectations doesn’t, however, mean that you’re giving up on your long-term goals and dreams. Instead, it means that you choose to approach your goals with a sense of detachment. You can still work on them, but you do it with the understanding that the outcome is uncertain. By reducing the attachment to specific results, you free yourself from the emotional ups and downs that come with unmet and unrealistic expectations.

I have seen many people who believe that their ultimate happiness comes from the expectations they set. If I talk about real-life scenarios, then positive and realistic expectations — such as looking forward to a vacation — can make you feel happy. The anticipation that comes with the planning can make you feel more happy than the event itself. This is called affective forecasting.

But, there’s a downside to this phenomenon as well. Because of the anticipation, you might end up misjudging how much happiness you should anticipate when the actual event happens. Anticipation can be exciting, indeed, but the reality might not always meet your expectations.

How to Live Without Expectations?

Living with fewer unrealistic expectations is possible. With the help of some practical steps, you can create a more accepting mindset. Here are some ways you can live without expectations;

1. Focus on What You Can Control

Know that you can’t control everything. Once you truly understand this, you’ll begin to live life without expectations. Life is all about ups and downs, and trying to control everything can cause disappointment and frustration. So, let go of your control and let yourself face uncertainty. Trust that things will happen as they are meant to be.

2. Note The Expectations

When you expect too much and end up not meeting those expectations, feelings like disappointment are sure to arise. Once you feel these emotions, take a moment to notice them, and reflect on what caused them. Use your words to express your feelings and ask yourself their cause and how you felt after. Once you begin to note the expectations, you’ll change how you set them too.

3. Set Realistic Expectations

I do this often, so I can tell you how uncomfortable it is to set unrealistic expectations and not have them met. I am still working on it, and so can you. Try to set realistic expectations — ones that are manageable, at least. Instead of setting yourself up for failure, break your expectations into smaller ones, so that you won’t feel too discouraged even if you fail to meet them.

4. Be Grateful

We don’t realize this, but there is power in gratitude that you need to harness. Focusing on what we have rather than what we lack can help us change our perspective. When you practice gratitude, you learn to appreciate the present moment and reduce your reliance on other factors for your happiness.

5. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

This is a common trap we all fall into – comparison. We set expectations for ourselves just by comparing ourselves to others. When others do well on something and you find yourself struggling, then you fall into despair. You need to learn to set expectations based on your skills alone. Focus on what you can do, not what others have been doing.

6. Focus on the Process

The next thing you can do to live without expectations is to focus on the process rather than what’s waiting for you at the end. Trust the effort, trust the process. When you focus on what you are doing rather than what’s waiting for you, then you feel yourself grow. This process can help you feel fulfilled with what’s happening now.

7. Seek Support

We try and try, and yet we feel like we’re not going further. It happens to the best of us. When you can’t seem to manage to live without expectations, then choose to seek support rather than run away from it. Having a support system can help you develop healthy ways to cope, set expectations, and change your thinking.

Do Expectations Affect Your Happiness?

Expectations can influence your happiness, indeed. When your expectations are realistic, they can motivate you to do more, and be better, however, when they are unrealistic, they can cause disappointment and unhappiness. Unrealistic expectations come from social pressure, cultural practices, and insecurities. You expect yourself to excel in everything you do, but these high expectations only create a ground for failure.

What’s more, is that expectations can impact the kind of relationships you have with others. When you expect people to behave in certain ways, you set yourself up for disappointment. Your relationships become strained and cause feelings of resentment and frustration.

To avoid the negative effects of expectations on your happiness, you need to recognize that you have unrealistic expectations and change them. I hope the ways I’ve mentioned in this article will help you change your expectations and teach you how to live happily without them.
