The Importance Of Creative Thinking In Life

“Creative thinking – in terms of idea creativity – is not a mystical talent. It is a skill that can be practiced and nurtured.” – Edward de Bono

Creative thinking is the ability to think outside the box, to see the bigger picture keeping in mind the little things. It is the ability to look at a problem and figure out a new and creative solution for it.

Creative thinking is not limited to artists, musicians, writers, and performers. Anyone can be a creative thinker. To become a creative thinker you need to see all sides of a situation or a problem. It is asking yourself – “why not this way?” Creative thinkers are always on the lookout for a different solution than those of others.

Creativity is one of the most important attributes of a human being’s life. Creative thinking makes us more mentally active, curious, optimistic, and inventive. Creative thinkers don’t look at problems as challenges but rather as interesting puzzles that they are craving to solve.

People who think creatively are observers. They engage their right-brain – the creative part of our brain – that promotes intuitive thinking and open-mindedness. They let different ideas flow through them and are open to various possibilities.

Characteristics Of A Creative Thinker

Everyone is creative to some degree. Some common traits of a creative thinker are:

  • They are receptive to new ideas
  • They are extremely curious beings
  • They have a wide range of interests

Importance Of Creative Thinking

When we think of creative solutions for the problems in our lives, we become more aware of our situations. Creative thinking gives us the freedom to engage with the world around us on our own terms. With this thinking process, we are free of self-judgment.

Creative thinking makes us more aware of ourselves and our standing in our surroundings. We are using our thoughts and beliefs in the process of creative thinking. We learn and we grow in the process.

When we are thinking creatively about a solution, we are not afraid to present our ideas hence helping us become more confident. For instance, when in a meeting, your team manager asks a solution to a particular problem. You answer with a creative, out of the box solution. This thinking will help you contribute to your work and group, increasing your productivity and confidence in the process.
