“I Don’t Know What To Do With My Life”: Here’s What You Can Do!
Reaching a stalemate in life is not uncommon. We often find ourselves standing at a crossroads in life where we don’t seem to know what to do next. All we do is stand there and say, “I don’t know what to do with my life” Sounds familiar to you?
When we’re young, as in teenage years, we often wonder about our future and we like to think that we’ll have a career all sorted out by our mid-20s and that we’ll be happy for the next 50 or so years. But, how can a teenage mind grasp what happiness for the rest of their life would look like?
No one knows what life has in store for you and you can’t always know what will make you feel happy tomorrow let alone 10 or 20 years from now. What brings you joy today, say your job, might fail to do so in the next couple of years. And what you think is a waste of time, say your hobbies, might be the one thing that will make you happy in the coming years.
Sometimes though, you’re just stuck at a point in your life, contemplating what went wrong or what you could have done to make it all better. And it is during those times when you truly pause and wonder,
“I don’t know what to do next…”
In any case – if you’re a young graduate, a fledgling professional, or a middle-aged person going through an existential crisis – such thoughts are bound to pop up in your mind.
Here are some things that you can do when you don’t know what to do with your life anymore!
What To Do If You Don’t Know What To Do?
1. Declutter Your Mind
When it seems like you’ve lost all sense of direction in life, start by decluttering your mind. The best and simplest way to do it is by exercising and staying active. When you don’t know what to do next in your life, start small by doing exercise (at least 30 minutes a day).
Getting regular exercise can help you not only stay active but also help you keep your mind clear of errant thoughts. You can try running in the mornings, cycling, or even yoga to get started. Anything that keeps you active.
2. Figure Out What’s Important To You
Next, you need to figure out what is the most important thing in your life. Answering this question can give you the solution that you’re looking for. Trust me. Once you understand what is the one thing that defines you and your life’s purpose, it’ll become easier to take the next step.
Another benefit of this step is that it’ll help you limit your choices. And when you have limited choices, you won’t feel overwhelmed. Try to limit your options and see how you can use those options to embrace the change in your life.
3. Seek Inspiration From Others
Despite what we believe, it is easier to draw inspiration from others. Read inspirational books, watch motivational speeches, and try to understand other people’s life challenges and how they overcome those obstacles. It can be a great way to draw motivation when you’re stuck thinking, “I don’t know what to do with myself.”
Don’t just read, watch or listen but try to truly understand how they got through their challenges, what prevented them from getting where they are, and how their efforts paid off. Learn from them and draw inspiration from their experiences.
4. Volunteer If You Can
Explore more about what intrigues you and if you can find some ways you can turn that interest into volunteering. It could be anything, a job, a hobby, or an interest you’ve been wanting to explore. If you can’t volunteer, then try job shadowing. Maybe that’ll give you a new perspective on your life.
Try to do a lot of reading and try to get hands-on experience with what you love to do or would like to pursue in the future. This kind of volunteering will make you more involved in what you do until you get where you wish to be.
5. Set Some Goals
Have you ever tried a 30-day challenge? No? Well, it’s time you align your goals with a 30-day challenge and get to work. You can also set weekly goals and work through them one by one until you reach the end of the month. You’ll be amazed at how much you can get done when you do one thing a day.
See that the goals you set are realistic and can be achieved within the time frame you’ve set. Achieving these goals will give you some confidence and restore your belief in yourself. You’ll see that you have a goal and the will to work toward that goal until you reach your destination.
6. Find Out Who You Are
Try to figure out who you are. And I’m not talking about your physical identity but your spiritual and mental identity. What are you most passionate about? What do you wish for in your life? These kinds of questions will help you get unstuck from wherever in life you’re stuck. Answering these questions may also give you an insight into your truest self.
To start with, you can begin letting go of your past and accept the changes that your life is currently experiencing. When you know who you are, it’ll give you the courage and confidence to take a purposeful step in your life.
7. Keep Looking For Opportunities
There are times in our lives when we close the doors to opportunities without knowing what we’re doing. How will you explore what life has in store for you if you don’t allow room for opportunities? So, keep looking for opportunities and if they come knocking, let them in!
There are times when the “right time” is anytime. So don’t keep waiting for the “right moment”. Just take a leap of faith and allow room for opportunities as they come.
Wrap-Up
If you find yourself thinking, “I don’t know what to do with my life anymore…”, try the aforementioned ways to improve your life and bring a change to your stagnant life. Life is never an easy journey, but with just a few simple steps you can make it a rewarding one.
All you need to know is who you are, what brings you joy, what defines your life’s purpose, and how you use that to bring a change to your life – and you’re set!
Just remember, that there’s no right time to start. Whenever opportunities arise, take that as a sign to start! You can always restart if you find yourself stuck in life.
If you’re still unsure what to do when you don’t know what to do in life, you can reach out to a life coach or counselor who can guide you through life’s many hurdles and challenges. There’s always room to make mistakes and correct them. All you have to do is allow yourself to embrace success and failures as a part of life’s journey.
In little ways, you can discover your life’s purpose and begin living the life that you deserve. I hope this blog helped you figure out what to do if you don’t know what to do with your life.
