2024 is definitely going to be our year because a different desire is topping the list especially related to Gen Z. According to a recent survey published by Forbes Health, the young generation is looking forward to mental health improvement as a resolution in 2024.

In this blog, we are going to discuss why Gen Z cited mental health improvement as a top new year’s resolution for 2024. So, let us get into the survey…

What’s the survey all about?

The survey is published by Forbes Health in relation to 1,005 US adults. The survey was conducted from November 18 to November 22. Below are the results of the study published:

  • 45% noted an improvement in mental health as a top New Year’s resolution
  • 39% noted an improvement in fitness
  • 37% noted an improvement in weight loss
  • 33% noted an improvement in diet and nutrition

If you focus on the data and graph provided in the survey, you will be able to find that a higher proportion of younger adults want to focus on their mental health. We all are aware that common mental conditions like depression and anxiety are on the rise and getting worse day by day. According to a study published by the World Health Organization (WHO), young people are at risk of experiencing these issues.

Therefore, Forbes Health conducted a survey to find out how the younger generation wants to head into 2024 keeping mental health needs in mind. Luckily, awareness of mental health issues was drastically observed in younger generations. This happened because of the following reasons:

  • Amplified exposure
  • Learned experiences from the past (specifically from Covid-19)
  • The proliferation of the mental health industry
  • Reduced stigma
  • Raised awareness on various platforms like blogs, videos, and social media platforms)

Why does this survey provide a ray of hope?

In the past few years, celebrities, athletes, and politicians have come forward and normalized the conversation around mental health. Be it Naomi Osaka or Selena Gomez, they all have contributed to raising awareness. This not only helped raise awareness but also helped provide common solutions to everyday mental health problems.

According to Dr. Romanoff, “Young people are especially able to seize the opportunities to communicate with others who may be experiencing similar circumstances. Not only does this create a sense of community, but it also can provide common solutions to problems faced by many.”

In relation to this, teletherapy platforms and virtual mental health platforms have provided an opportunity to connect with a mental health professional. The best part is that platforms like BetterHelp, Talkspace and Cerebral are coming forward for younger generations to help them stick to the resolutions in 2024.

Ways to prioritize mental health in 2024

New Year is bringing a lot of opportunities and it can be used as a positive trigger to enact a healthy change. With consistency and proper goal-setting, all generations can come together to bring positive change and provide a non-judgmental environment for everyone.

According to Dr. Romanoff, “We tend to set resolutions because the New Year serves as a cyclical marker of time during which we re-evaluate and take inventory of our lives.” If you’re feeling stuck on goal-setting, don’t worry, and follow the below-mentioned steps for achieving goals effectively:

Step 1: Differentiate your short-term and long-term goals

Step 2: Keep finding equivalence in your goal-settings

Step 3: Prepare yourself to beat the obstacles

Step 4: Be consistent, flexible, and resilient

Step 5: Find a healthy way to transform your goals into reality
