Do You Love Watching ASMR Videos? Know More About The Magic Of ASMR!
Does whispering, blowing, scratching, tapping, or crinkling sound bring relaxation to you? Well, this is known as the magic of ASMR videos and audio. These days ASMR videos and audios are trending on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.
And, we all have watched them, enjoyed them, and scrolled down to watch the next ASMR video. The major reason behind this scrolling is that ASMR videos bring blissful relaxation which makes us watch more such videos.
If you love watching ASMR videos or listening to ASMR audios, you might not be aware of what ASMR actually is. First of all, let us understand what ASMR is.
What is ASMR?
A: Autonomous
S: Sensory
M: Meridian
R: Response
Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a term for describing calming sensation or tingling that someone experiences by watching or listening to a certain video or audio. ASMR is considered to be close to personal attention.
Autonomous: Feeling is present in your body
Sensory: Senses perceive the feeling
Meridian: Energy felt by the body
Response: Feeling is a reaction to stimuli
According to research, everyone cannot experience ASMR, and people who generally do, usually describe ASMR as a pleasant tingling accompanied by blissful drowsiness and relaxation.
Understanding ASMR Videos/Audios through Psychology
I was not able to find the exact research since ASMR is new and trending, therefore, a lot of research is going on but it is not published yet. For people who are involved in ASMR, feelings are driven by calming and happy sensations throughout the body.
ASMR videos or audios are nothing but videos of someone carefully performing a task like they do in mukbang videos. If someone gets a shivery or chill sensation, it means that they experience ASMR videos.
According to psychology, everyone reacts to the triggers in a different way. For example, some people might enjoy watching or listening to the typing sound while someone enjoys scratching.
Why is ASMR Videos Trending?
Various online forums or YouTube channels have been a buzz because of presenting ASMR-related content. Research related to ASMR is still limited. The only reason ASMR is trending is that people enjoy them watching or listening and it brings a calming sensation into their body which helps them sleep well or focus well.
Artists creating ASMR content are referred to as “ASMRtists.” ASMR Darling, GibiASMR, and GentleWhispering ASMR are one of the most popular channels on YouTube presenting ASMR content. The best part about ASMR is that the content tries to stimulate a reaction related to ASMR.
Signs you Experience ASMR
As I mentioned above, experiencing ASMR can be different for everyone. You might experience a chilly reaction to watching someone draw an incredible painting while someone might enjoy people preparing lunch or dinner. Overall, the effect of ASMR is calming, sedating, and physiologically arousing.
Basically, it’s a tingling sensation originating from the top and moving towards the spine and limbs produced due to music-induced chills. Such a happy feeling is compared to massages, tickling, or goosebumps.
ASMR is a non-touch experience that stimulates or triggers the feeling of relaxation and touch. In a study, it was considered to be a synesthetic experience. People experience being massaged without being touched. People who experience ASMR generally feel:
- Calm
- Relaxed
- Drowsy/sleepy
- Able to manage anxiety, depression, and insomnia
According to research, people who experience ASMR have reduced heart rates as compared to people who do not get involved in ASMR. This helps in promoting relaxation methods like mindfulness and listening to music.
Types of ASMR
There are different types of ASMR like someone applying makeup, preparing food, cutting vegetables, restocking the pantry or fridge, folding a sheet of paper, eating food, and more. some of the most commonly experienced ASMR triggers are:
